One of the most common shapes that structural steel is fabricated into is steel angle. These angles are used in different industries as brackets and reinforcements. They are commonly available as stainless steel and mild steel angles.

Steel is one of the most in-demand metal raw material and is used across industries. It is bent and moulded to make products of different shapes including steel channels, tubes, beams etc. These shapes find use in the construction industry, automotive industry and machinery manufacturing besides other industries.

    What is a steel angle?

Steel angles are hot-rolled carbon steel that are moulded into L-shaped cross sections. The sides of the cross section are called legs of the angle.

    Steel angle sizes and weights:

Most angles available in the market feature a 90° shape. There are other variations available as well. Many angle suppliers in India can even customise the angle sizes according to client specifications.

    Types of steel angles

According to ‘ISI Handbook for Structural Engineers’ rolled steel angle sections are classified as:

    • Indian Standard equal angles -Equal angles are steel angles that feature legs with equal length and thickness.
    • Indian Standard unequal angles – Unequal angles are steel angles with legs that feature unequal length but equal thickness
    • Indian Standard bulb angles – Bulb angles are formed when a small bulb like shape is connected at the end of one of the legs of the angle. When it comes to bulb angle, the bulb is connected to a web of flattened steel and the web is in turn connected to a flange also made from flattened steel.

    Uses of steel angles

Steel angles are used in making:

    • Frames

Due to its ductility and high-strength, steel angles are an excellent resource for making frames. Angle framing is used to support interior mouldings, cladding, handrails, trimmings, utility carts, paneling, etc.

    • Bridges

Steel angles are widely used in the construction of bridges. Angles provide reinforcement to concrete which reduces material handling for builders. These are used in bridge components like bearings, arches, or girders.

    • Machinery and appliances

Since angles form an excellent material for structural support, industrial machinery and even household appliances use steel angles for reinforcement. To give their unique shape more structural integrity corners of appliances like washing machines, industrial ovens, stoves, etc., are fitted with steel angles.

    • Warehouses shelves

Warehouses are filled with storage racks that are built to carry heavy weights. These shelves don’t buckle easily under heavy loads.  These racks are made of structural steel and the corners are reinforced with steel angles to add to the strength of the shelf.

    Steel angle sizes

The format for writing sizes of a steel angle is defined by Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). The equal and unequal steel angle sections are designated by reference symbol ∟. This symbol is followed by length of legs and thickness of leg in mm.  For example:

    • Equal angle – ∟130 x 130 x 8 mm (∟130 130 @ 0.159 kN/m)
    • Unequal angle – ∟200 x 100 x 10 mm (∟ 200 100 @ 0.228 kN/m)

The rolled steel bulb angles are represented as BA, followed by depth in mm (length of the web) of the section and weight in kN per metre length of bulb angle.

N denotes Newton which is a unit of force. KN/m or kilonewton per meter is the unit of linearly distributed force. This means that kN/m is the force of 1000 newton distributed over a length of one meter.

The angle sizes vary according to steel fabricators. Some make it according to client specifications while others make general sizes to cater to the larger needs of the market. As a builder, engineer or any other professional, it’s recommended to refer to a MS angle weight chart for reference.

    Steel angle prices

Price of angles depends on steel angle sizes and weights. It also depends on the grade of steel used to make the angle and the manufacturer you are buying it from. Most steel angle product price ranges from ₹29400 to ₹61000 per ton.

Steel rates fluctuate based on raw material cost, government policies and market conditions. Given below are the average prices of angle products in India:

Price range of steel angles Percentage of products
    ₹29400 – 35000 11%
    ₹35000 – 42000 49%
    ₹42000 – 51000 26%
    ₹51000 – 61000 13%
