What is a GST certificate?

A Goods and Services Tax or GST registration certificate (Form GST REG-06) is an official document of proof that a particular business that exceeds the GST registration threshold limit, is registered under the GST regime.

It comes with details like: Business’s Legal name and Trade name, address, type of registration, GSTIN (GST Identification Number), etc.

A GST certificate for regular taxpayers has lifetime validity unless surrendered or cancelled. From 1 January 2022, revocation of cancelled GST registration can only be done through Aadhaar authentication.

The process to download a GST certificate online is the same as explained above. You will have to visit the official GST portal, login to your account, and visit the Services section. Under User Services, you can click on the View/Download Certificates option to download Form No. GST REG-06 commonly known as the GST registration certificate in PDF.

You will have to log in to the GST portal to download your GST registration certificate. Without your login credentials, you will not be able to download GST certificate.

How to get GST certificate online?

There are different types of GST certificates available on the GST portal. For any GST certificate download online, you will first have to log in to your account and select the suitable option. For instance:

You can login to your GST account to view/download any certificate or returns document. Once you login to the GST portal:

  • Follow the path: Services > Returns > View Filed Returns
  • Enter details for Financial year, Return Filing period, and Return type
  • Click on ‘Search’
  • Click on ‘View’ or ‘Download’ (signed form) to get your GST Returns certificate in PDF

However, you can alternatively download the ‘Returns Offline Tool’ if you want to work offline. Follow the steps:

  • Visit the GST portal

What is included in the GST certificate?

Form GST REG-06 or the GST registration certificate contains:

  • Registration number
  • Legal name
  • Trade name (if any)
  • Constitution of Business (i.e., Type of Business)
  • Address of Principal Place of Business (i.e., Office address)
  • Date of Liability
  • Date of Validity (this is not applicable NA)
  • Particulars of Approving Authority (Digital Signature DSC of Approving Authority required)
  • Date of Issue of Certificate

Annexture A

  • 15 digit GSTIN
  • Details of address (any additional place of business)
  • Legal name and Trade name (Note: Legal name is the registered name, while Trade name is the business or brand name)

Annexture B

  • Legal name and Trade name
  • Business address
  • Details of proprietor (Name, Designation, State, photograph)

What is the validity of the GST registration certificate?

The GST registration certificate comes with lifetime validity. It can be surrendered or cancelled (by GST). However, based on the nature of taxpayer the validity can differ. For example,

  • GST registration certificate of casual taxpayer – 90 days validity but can be extended or renewed

How to amend to GST registration certificate?

After GST certificate download, if you want to rectify an error or edit any detail, you will have to file an Application for Amendment of Registration. This can be for either the Core or Non-Core fields and must be done within 15 days of its occurrence.

  • Core fields: Requires approval of Tax Officials
  • Non-core fields: Does not require approval of Tax Officials

How to amend Core fields:

Core fields include the following:

  • Legal name of the business if there is no change in PAN
  • Addition/Removal of Members/Stakeholders/Partners/Directors etc.
  • Change of Address (Principal and Additional place of business) other than State

To make the changes, follow the steps below:

  • Visit the GST portal and login with your credentials
  • Follow the path: Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration
  • Make the changes and select the verification checkbox under the verification tab
  • Select the authorised signatory and enter the location
  • Sign in using the approved DSC or EVC
  • Check email/SMS on update status
  • Download GST certificate PDF online after approval
